Male celebrities dominated last year’s TV entertainment shows. But this year, the Korea Broadcasting Network (KBS) expects to turn the tables with its new reality series “Sisters’ Slam Dunk,” which started Friday.
“Ladies and gentlemen, here returns the heyday for women in variety shows,” said comedian Hong Jin-kyung, during a press conference at the Glad Hotel in Yeouido, western Seoul, last Wednesday. “We watched men dominating the TV shows with tears of blood, and finally we got our stage.”
The star-studded show ― hosted by six women from various fields ― draws on the real-life stories of the women and the cast come together to help each other realize their dreams. The first episode depicted comedian Kim Sook’s dream of becoming a tour bus driver. It recorded a 5.2 percent viewer rating, according to Nielson Korea.

Kim revealed that she has always wanted to travel on a tour bus and rapper Jessi helped her with the driving. Tiffany of Girls’ Generation was in control of the money, while actress Min Hyo-rin showed an unexpected easy-going personality, after many thought she would be the meticulous one.
Jessi and Tiffany also revealed that they have been friends since middle school, growing up together in the United States. They both achieved their dream of becoming a singer.
Despite an age gap of 14 years between youngest and oldest on the show, the cast seem to get along well.
“The cast lineup was unexpected and we all thought it’s going to be a serious mismatch, but after talking to each other, we knew we met on common ground,” said Kim Sook.
“We hope the audience can feel happy watching us talking about our dreams and helping each other to make those dreams come true.”
Veteran actress Ra Mi-ran said the show can also be educational or even a documentary, because it allows people to think over their real dreams, which many forget in a busy life.
Sisters’ Slam Dunk airs Fridays at 11 p.m. on KBS 2.
