After a hard year of domestic problems and health concerns, comedian and show host Kim Gu-ra has cemented his position as a leading TV entertainer, clinching the Grand Award at the MBC Entertainment Awards Tuesday night.
He beat strong candidates including Yoo Jae-suk of “Infinity Challenge.”
“It wasn’t my efforts that made this possible,” Kim, 45, whose real name is Kim Hyun-dong, said in his award speech. “It was because of all of you who contributed to me winning this award. Variety shows wouldn’t have existed without TV viewers. And I wish they will keep having an interest in my MBC talk show program 'Radio Star,' which is like my heart.”
Kim also spoke of his past “wrongdoings.” Although he did not specify, he is known for making controversial remarks.

And he mentioned “those who disagree with his style on TV,” admitting he is aware some dislike his “straight-forward and scathing” comments.
But Kim has moderated his tone since 2013.
It is Kim’s first award since his debut on SBS in 1993 and comes after a divorce in August over financial matters, ending 18 years of marriage. Kim also confessed he suffered panic attacks.
Kim and his wife reportedly tried to work out their differences but decided a divorce would best serve their only son, Dong-hyun. Dong-hyun performs in K-pop under the stage name MC GREE.
Kim, who lives with his son, has repeatedly shown affection to him. Toward the end of his award speech, he said: “Dong-hyun, are you watching? You’re doing well!”
Kim helms some 10 TV shows across major networks and cable channels.
