CL, a member of girl group 2NE1, was second behind Russian President Vladimir Putin in the online vote for this year’s TIME magazine list of the world’s 100 most influential people.
Putin edged rapper-singer CL (Lee Chae-lin) to top the list with 6.95 percent of the votes. Lady Gaga, Rihanna and Taylor Swift rounded out the top five with 2.6, 1.9 and 1.8 percent, respectively.
TIME described CL as not quite a household name but as having “impressed critics at stateside arenas.”
The TIME 100 list spans politics, entertainment, business, technology, science and religion, among others.
The final list will be unveiled Thursday.
Jo Su-mi to hold free concert for students
Jo Su-mi will stage a free concert for students studying classical music.
Jo’s agency, SMI Entertainment, said Monday the Grammy Award-winning soprano would perform at the Seoul Arts Center in southern Seoul on May 11. The aim of the concert, titled “My Dream ... Music!” is to support students who dream of performing classical music on the global stage.
“Hearing world-renowned soprano Joan Sutherland perform in Korea gave me the inspiration needed to dream of performing in front of an international audience,” Jo said. “I hope this concert will do the same for these students.”
Jo has selected a repertoire of baroque, opera, traditional Korean and contemporary music. Pianist Andrey Vinichenko and violinist Anna Fedotova are also set to appear. Students can register for tickets until April 26 at www.facebook.com/sopranosumijo. For more information, call 02) 3461-0976.
New smartphone app for Bulguksa Temple released
The Cultural Heritage Administration (CHA) has released a smartphone application for touring the Bulguksa Temple in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province.
The CHA said Tuesday the application, "Bulguksa in My Hands,” uses cutting-edge information and communications technology (ICT), such as the Internet of Things (IoT), augmented reality and location sensing to give a better understanding of the Buddhist temple that dates back to the Silla Kingdom (57 B.C.-935 A.D.).
The application provides about 80 items related to the temple, known for the two stone pagodas, Dabotap and Seokgatap. Users can access photos, videos and 3D images, as well as stories related to the temple.
The application uses Beacon technology based on Bluetooth that enables users to receive information when they approach major treasures at the temple.
The application can be downloaded from Apple’s App Store and Google’s Playstore.
Other applications in the series introducing Korea's top cultural heritage sites through state-of-the-art technology include "Deoksugung in My Hands", released in 2013, and "Gyeongbokgung in My Hands", released in 2014.
