Professor Min Byoung-chul of Konkuk University known for his anti-cyber bulling campaign has launched a new one to write online condolences to families of Sichuan earthquake victims.
It is a second campaign for Sichuan earthquake victims, following one in 2008. On April 20, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake shook the Sichuan Province, killing 193 and leaving more than 11,000 injured.
The campaign has a Chinese partner ― the People’s Daily, a Chinese Communist Party paper, and participants are invited to visit
to leave comments.
“The webpage was created in Chinese as well so that Chinese-speaking users can leave messages,” Min said in a press release. “Careless Internet comments can cause tremendous damage to those who underwent the tragedy firsthand. It even has a potential to cause a diplomatic row.”
A representative from the People’s Daily was quoted as saying, “I am convinced that this campaign will enhance trust and friendship between Koreans and Chinese.”
Known as Sunfull Movement, the professor’s anti-bullying campaign started in May 2007 by a group of his students. Under his leadership, the movement has grown over time, and now 6,000 schools and 100 civic organizations are registered members.
In March, Min presented a book of condolences to families of victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting rampage through Sung Kim, the U.S. ambassador to Korea. The shooting in Newton, Connecticut occurred in December last year, and the condolences book contained 5,000 messages from the movement’s website (
.)
The word “sunfull” is a combination of Chinese character “sun” meaning good or virtuous and “full,” a Korean expression meaning “reply.”
Min was appointed as Korea’s first ambassador for cyber diplomacy in November by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade with a charter to encourage a positive online exchange between the peoples of different countries.
