As the gentle breeze of spring moves through the air and flowers begin to bloom, pianist Son Yeol-eum and violinist Svetlin Roussev are set to enchant audiences at The Korea Times' annual Spring Concert on March 25.
This highly anticipated event, now in its 19th year and hosted by The Korea Times, highlights the news outlets' steadfast dedication to cultural enrichment and corporate social responsibility against the backdrop of Korea's rising influence on the global stage.
Held at the prestigious Lotte Concert Hall in southern Seoul, this 100-minute performance marks the release of Son and Roussev’s latest collaboration single, "Love Music," centering on music from the Austro-German region of the late Romanticism era.
The concert's program begins with Korngold’s "Four Pieces from the Incidental Music to W. Shakespeare’s 'Much Ado About Nothing'" Op. 11 and continues to Faure’s Sonata for Violin and Piano No. 1 in A major Op. 13 and Waxman’s “Love Music" paraphrase based on Wagner’s Opera “Tristan & Isolde," culminating with Strauss’ Sonata for Violin and Piano in E-flat major Op. 18.
Son, 37, is one of the most sought-after Korean pianists on the global stage. Renowned for her virtuosity and versatility, she garnered international attention when she secured second prize and the Best Chamber Music Performance at the 2009 Van Cliburn Competition. At the 2011 International Tchaikovsky Competition, she won the Silver Medal.
In recent years, Son has served as artist-in-residence with the Residentie Orkest in The Hague and made notable debuts with prestigious orchestras, including the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the Sydney Symphony. Her interpretations of Mozart's works have garnered widespread acclaim, including a performance of Piano Concerto No. 21 in C major, K. 467, which has amassed nearly 23 million views on YouTube.
Roussev rose to prominence after winning the Sendai International Competition in 2001. As an artist in residence with the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra, he promotes Bulgarian culture and teaches at the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris. Since 2011, he has been performing the Amati-Stradivarius violin loaned by Amundi.
Son has been collaborating with the Bulgarian-born violinist since 2015 and their recitals have been acclaimed as impeccable, striking a delicate balance between the two different musical instruments.
