Mark, a former NCT member who recently launched a solo career, apologized Tuesday in a statement released by his new label after photos showed him wearing a T-shirt featuring the Confederate flag.

The photo drew immediate backlash from international fans who cited the flag's association with white supremacy and racism.

The criticism highlighted an early test of cultural awareness for the newly independent solo artist. The incident's timing, close to June 19, amplified the backlash — the date is also known as Juneteenth, a U.S. federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery.

The shirt featured the flag of the Confederacy, which was formed in 1861 when 11 Southern states seceded from the U.S. to preserve slavery.

"We would like to extend our sincere aapologies for the concern, discomfort and disappointment caused by the vintage T-shirt that appeared in a recently shared photograph," Mark said in a statement released by his agency, Upper Room.

Following the global criticism, the label addressed the styling oversight.

"The garment was selected solely as a vintage wardrobe item," Upper Room said. "Upon recognizing the historical significance and sensitivity associated with the symbol displayed on the T-shirt, we took measures to ensure it would not be visible in any official content."

The agency acknowledged its oversight regarding the styling choice.

"Regardless of intent, we recognize that this matter should have been handled with greater diligence and care. We take full responsibility for this oversight," the label said. "Upper Room and the artist unequivocally reject and do not tolerate racism, hate, discrimination or any form of intolerance. We understand the seriousness of the concerns that have been raised and deeply regret the distress this incident has caused."

Mark debuted with NCT in 2016. He left SM Entertainment in April to launch his own label.
