Busan wins starring role for Korea's largest film studio

Korea’s largest film studio will be built in the southern port city of Busan by 2020.

Busan Metropolitan City Hall signed an agreement on Tuesday with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) and the Gijanggun ward office to build the studio in Gijang.

The complex will be on 250,000 square meters of land. Its largest studio will be three times that of the nation’s present biggest, the DIMA film studio (1,824 square meters) in Ansung, Gyonggi Province.

The complex will have two studios -- one of 5,610 square meters and another of 1,650 square meters -- plus production support facilities and a cutting-edge post-production suite. The complex will be completed by 2020.

“Having a world-class film studio will help bolster the Korean film industry’s international competitiveness,” said Kim Kyu-ok, Busan’s vice mayor for economic affairs.
