Winners Samsung Electronics
, the world’s top maker of smartphones, memory chips and flat-panel TVs, said it recorded its best quarterly operating profit in the second quarter of this year, Friday.
The electronics giant’s operating profit stood at 9.5 trillion won ($8.36 billion), up 8.2 percent from 8.78 trillion won the previous quarter.
The company’s revenue in the same period was estimated at 57 trillion won, up 19.8 percent from the previous year, according to its earnings guidance.
Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME)
, the world’s third-biggest shipbuilder, announced on July 1 that it inked a contract to produce two LNG carriers worth more than $400 million.
Under the contract, DSME will construct two 173,400 cubic-meter classed LNG transport vessels for Angelicoussis Group, the largest Greek shipping company which owns more than 100 ships.

GS Engineering & Construction
, a major builder in Korea, and its subcontractors were caught by the coast guard allegedly dumping wastes at Busan, the second-largest city in Korea, local news channels reported Wednesday.
According to the report, Korea Coast Guard found out construction wastes, which weigh some 50,000 tons, at a dump yard near the construction site of a new harbor in Busan.
The coast guard said it will expand the investigation to establish whether construction waste has been dumped illegally at other construction sites around Busan’s new harbor.
However, GS E&C and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries argued Thursday that the report is not true because the amount of dumped wastes is less than what has been reported.
