Samsung Display and LG Display unveiled next-generation display technologies at the annual trade show Display Week, currently taking place in San Jose, California, demonstrating their commitment to innovation and retaining market leadership.

The industry's largest expo, organized by the Society for Information Display, runs through Thursday.

At the annual event, Samsung showcased the next-generation quantum-dot LED display that realizes RGB pixels using only quantum dots, which refer to tiny semiconductor particles that convert electrical energy into light and are used to produce precise colors.

The company also introduced light field display (LFD), a kind of glass-free 3D technology that creates 3D images by allowing the user's left and right eyes to see different images.

The company added its advanced eye-tracking technology calibrates the 3D screen in real-time to the user's eye position to show full high-definition-quality images.

At a time when the smartphone market has shown stagnant growth, Samsung Display showcased its technologies to lead display for laptops, tablets and extended reality (XR) devices.

The technologies include ultra-thin Oxide technology, which enables thinner and lighter laptops and tablets by reducing thickness and weight by more than 20 percent by using a single layer of glass, and RGB OLEDoS, which utilizes red, green and blue OLEDs on a silicon wafer to produce colors without the need for other light sources.

"We are excited to showcase Samsung Display's unrivaled foldable (display) competitiveness and the next-generation of innovative technologies that can drive the IT and XR era at the world's largest academic exhibition attended by the world's leading scholars and display experts," a company spokesperson said.

LG Display introduced its new OLED technology for virtual reality (VR), large OLED panels and automotive displays for software-driven vehicles.

In particular, the company unveiled its OLEDoS display for VR devices. At 1.3 inches in size, the display features ultra-high brightness of 10,000 nits, ultra-high resolution that supports up to 4,000 pixels per inch and accurate color expression capability.

The company also unveiled the industry's first OLEDoS for smartwatches at 1.3 inches in size and with 4K resolution. Other displays the company introduced are an 83-inch OLED TV panel, a gaming OLED panel and vehicle OLEDs.

"We will continue to introduce innovative products that deliver differentiated customer value through continuous research and development to solidify our technology leadership," Yoon Soo-young, chief technology officer of LG Display, said.
