LG Display unveiled the world's first 12-inch high-resolution stretchable display equipped with a free-form technology that enables it to be extended, folded and twisted without distortion or damage, the company said Tuesday.
The new product is the industry's first stretchable display that can be extended by 20 percent.
“Its high flexibility, durability and reliability maximize its potential for commercialization,” LG Display said in a press release.
Based on a highly resilient film made of a special silicon, also used for contact lenses, the new display has a rubber band-like flexibility that allows it to be stretched up to 14 inches. As it uses a micro-LED light with a pixel pitch of fewer than 40 micrometers, it can also withstand significant external impacts.
In addition, its s-form spring-wired structure enables it to withstand more than 10,000 repetitive changes to its forms.
The stretchable display is a result of a large-scale national R&D project. LG Display has worked with 20 institutions from both the industrial and academic sectors since being selected to lead the project in 2020 by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
The company expects the new product to be used for various industries, including fashion, wearables, mobility and gaming.
“We will successfully complete this project to enhance the competitiveness of Korean display technology while continuing to lead the industry's paradigm shift,” LG Display Executive Vice President Yoon Soo-young said.
