SK Telecom will open a digital content production studio that enables creators to produce mixed reality (MR) content utilizing Microsoft's Mixed Reality Capture Studio technology, the telecommunications arm of SK Group said Tuesday.
The company said the studio, named Jump Studio, will be the first MR production studio in Asia to use Microsoft's technology. An SK Telecom official said the exact launch date of the studio has not yet been decided, but it will open sometime during spring this year.
MR is technology that combines aspects of both augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies. Viewers wearing an MR headset can experience 360-degree views of MR content.
Like AR and VR, MR content is also expected to be widely consumed in entertainment and game sectors. There will be growing demand for MR content in the era of the super-fast 5G network as well.
With an aim to popularize AR, VR and MR content, Jump Studio will create digital content for entertainment, education and medical services.
“Innovating the content production process is essential to expand 5G network-based realistic media services. Jump Studio will lead to the popularization of such realistic media services,” Jeon Jin-soo, head of SK Telecom's 5GX business, said.
SK Telecom's move to nurture virtual reality content is in line with the government's policy. The Ministry of Science and ICT announced in January that it will invest 190 billion won ($160 million) this year to foster the country's digital content industry that includes VR, AR, MR and hologram content.
