Displays will play an important role in the fifth-generation (5G) network era in which a tremendous amount of data is processed much faster, and among others, organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays will become the “optimal window” to 5G devices, according to LG Display CEO and Vice Chairman Han Sang-beom, Thursday.
Han made the remarks in a keynote speech for the 2019 World Conference on Ultra HD Video Industry that took place in Guangzhou, China. Han became the first CEO of a Korean firm to be invited to the conference.
“It is important that you enjoy high-quality videos anywhere and anytime,” Han said. “The OLED display, combined with various sensors and functions, can deliver superb picture quality and audio.”
The conference is a major meeting place for Chinese industry experts, government officials, associations and the media to discuss the future of UHD technologies market.
TCL CEO and Founder Li Dongsheng and Sharp CEO and President Tai Jeng-wu also appeared as keynote speakers. This year's event housed 1,500 participants.
When discussing the roles and challenges of display makers in the 5G era, Han stressed that OLED panels provide the ultimate value to consumers, citing its ultra-high resolution and ultra-fast response times.
Han said the role of displays in the 5G era, in which internet connectivity speed and memory storage capacity are increasing dramatically, is becoming more and more essential.
“In line with the growing online content consumption, we will expand artificial intelligence-based online video services,” he said.
LG Display CEO also forecasted that demands for in-car entertainment functionality will grow in line with the development of autonomous vehicles in future smart cities.
“In the upcoming information and communication technology (ICT) era, where connectivity is the key, there are many collaborative opportunities,” he noted.
LG Display has mobilized all available resources to foster large OLED panels as its main growth engine.
The company is also investing heavily to explore new markets for OLED panels for cars.
