Samsung Electronics will supply its Exynos Auto V9 automotive semiconductors for Audi's in-vehicle infotainment system, the chip maker said Thursday.
It said the Exynos Auto V9 is a low-power, high-performance processor designed for advanced in-vehicle infotainment systems. The V9 chip is expected to be used in Audi cars starting 2021.
Samsung launched the Exynos Auto brand in October 2018 to nurture auto chips as its next growth engine.
The Exynos Auto V9 chip supports up to six displays and 12 camera connections for various sub-system content in infotainment systems. Its graphics processing unit (GPU) has three Mali G76 GPU cores that support multiple systems, such as the cluster display, central information display and rear-seat entertainment, simultaneously. For quality sound, the chip also has four HiFi 4 audio processors.
Samsung said the V9 chip can manage a safe and personalized driving environment as it is equipped with a neural processing unit (NPU). “The NPU can process visual and audio data for features such as face, speech or gesture recognition,” the firm said.
“Samsung is fully committed to bringing top-of-the-line automotive processors for safer and more pleasant driving experiences,” said Kenny Han, vice president of the firm's Device Solutions Division. “We are thrilled to introduce the new Exynos Auto line of products, starting with the Exynos Auto V9, which brings powerful processing performance to the next generation of automotive in-vehicle infotainment systems while meeting the industry's strict reliability requirements.”
Samsung is also developing auto chips that are used for the advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) and telematics system.
