LG Electronics is offering heavy discounts on its organic light-emitting-diode (OLED) TVs here, as part of efforts to boost sales.

This month, the nation’s second-largest electronics giant will provide a discount of up to 1.7 million won ($1,500) on premium TV lineups, the company said Monday.

The move comes amid growing demand for OLED TVs despite their relatively expensive price, compared with liquid crystal display (LCD) models.

In particular, this is the first time the company’s 55-inch 4K OLED TV is selling for less than 3 million won here, LG said. The model is priced at 2.99 million won during the sales period.

“The overwhelming picture quality of an OLED TV will help customers realize the genuine value of premium TVs,” said a company official. “The special promotion was organized to allow more users to enjoy LG’s high-end TVs.”

The company will also sell its 65-inch OLED TVs for 5-6 million won during the promotion, with discounts ranging from 990,000 won to 1.7 million won.

LG Electronics has in recent years pushed to expand OLED sales to turn the next-generation display into its next major cash cow.

But the high price has long been cited as the biggest problem holding back customers.

The company has a special promotion zone featuring hundreds of OLED TVs at major tradeshows - such as the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas and IFA in Germany.

In the high-end TV market, LG is in fierce competition with Samsung Electronics’ quantum dot light-emitting-diode (QLED) TVs.

LG claims that OLED comes with technological advantages with its self-lighting OLED pixels. This is because they do not need backlight panels and can deliver a deeper black than conventional TVs, according to the company.
