LG Display develops standard for automotive displays

LG Display said Sunday that it has teamed up with TUV SUD Group to develop what it calls a “standard” for automotive displays.

The jointly developed certification program is intended to prevent any significant fire damage to in-vehicle displays for the safety of drivers, the company said in a statement.

“This is an improved fire prevention system. It will prevent fires caused by unexpected situations. Specifically, when a vehicle catches fire, the system will automatically be operational to delay the spread of the fire,” company spokeswoman Jacquelyn Park said in the statement.

“The introduction of the program will help increase awareness of the safety of automotive displays for both consumers and car manufacturers,” Park added.

The latest program will be applied to all automotive displays to be manufactured by LG Display starting this July, said the statement.

LG Display has been supplying displays for backseats, dashboards and CIDs in vehicles.

LG Group’s display affiliate has identified automotive displays as one of its next growth engines, as the increasing implementation rate of such displays has helped the company see a surge in their shipments to this promising market.

The automotive display market is expected to grow rapidly over the next few years, according to iSuppli, a market research firm.

The researcher said making the right connections and providing committed long-term quality in product and service plus ensuring availability of long-term supply will be the “key criteria” for success instead of price competition.
