LG, KBS test new broadcasting technologies

By Yoon Sung-won

LG Electronics said Tuesday it will demonstrate new broadcasting technologies in collaboration with public broadcaster Korea Broadcasting System (KBS).

The company said it will continue to push for next-generation broadcasting based on digital technology it has developed for Korean and North American standards.

“We will lead the next-generation broadcasting industry by continuing to provide differentiated services for our clients,” LG Electronics Chief Technology Officer Ahn Seung-kwon said in a statement.

LG Electronics said it has tested new broadcasting technology with KBS including its emergency alert system (EAS) and electronic service guide (ESG) based on the Advanced Television System Committee 3.0 standards. The test was done in an ultra high-definition (UHD) broadcasting environment, it said.

“We are testing terrestrial UHD broadcasting to set standards,” an official at KBS said.

The EAS provides information in emergencies through a terrestrial broadcasting network. The ESG enables television viewers to check programming schedules.

LG Electronics said the new services are based on a technology called “real-time object delivery over unidirectional transport.” This technology enhances efficiency in the use of frequencies and allows broadcasters to distribute various additional services alongside their programming, it said.
