LG Display awarded for leading OLED mass-production

LG Display said Thursday it has received an award in Japan for successfully mass-producing large organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display panels.

The company said it received the 2015 HiVi Grand Prix, a technology award provided by Japan’s top audio and video media HiVi.

“We will continue to take the leading role in accelerating OLED use by establishing an ecosystem for the industry including equipment and material providers and clients while strengthening competitiveness in plastic OLED products through research and development,” LG Display said.

Previously in January 2012, the company received the same prize alongside its affiliate LG Electronics for the development of the film-type patterned retarder 3D technology, the first time for a Korean company.

Besides LG Display, global display makers such as Sharp and Toshiba have been awarded main prizes.

LG Display said it has fostered OLED displays as a key item for growth.

It became the first to mass-produce 55-inch OLED televisions in December 2012. Later, in May 2013, it launched the curved OLED television and developed an ultra high-definition OLED television and bendable OLED television in 2013.

On the global stage, it started providing its OLED television panels to China’s Skyworth, Konka and Changhong in 2014, and added Japanese makers including Panasonic to its client list last year.
