The Korea Internet and Security Agency (KISA) will open a new security platform that will work within the framework of the Internet of Things (IoT).
The state-run internet agency said Tuesday that it will open the platform called “IoT security test-bed” later this month as part of efforts to safeguard smart devices and networking systems amid mounting concerns over internet security.
“Security has become an indispensable part in vitalizing the IoT industry,” said KISA President and CEO Baik Kee-seung during a luncheon with reporters in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi Province, Tuesday. “The IoT security test-bed will serve as a base camp for the next-generation IoT ecosystem.”
The agency said any smart devices can be tested for security on the platform before they are launched. It will also serve as a security hub connecting small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), both of which are expected to share their technological expertise to build the security platform, said the agency. KISA is working with the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning to open the test-bed, which will open on Oct. 21.
The agency said it is seeking to expand the platform’s portfolio into the telecom sectors by teaming up with the nation’s major mobile carriers ― SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus. In 2016, the agency and the carriers plan to establish another platform to analyze weak spots prevalent in the IoT and telecom industry.
In February, the agency commercialized a key technology to prevent the potential risk of invasions of the fourth-generation (4G) network. A local company developed the 4G invasion prevention system and shared it with KT. The system was then exported to Japan’s mobile operator NTT Docomo.
The agency has cooperated with the ministry to build a security information-sharing system, called Cyber Threat Analysis and Sharing (C-TAS), to systemize measures to deal with increasing cyber attacks. More than 90 organizations and companies are using the C-TAS system, sharing 36 categories of potential cyber risks, it added.
“The KISA is pushing to create a new platform that individuals, companies and the nation are willing to support,” he said. “We are at the center of protecting information in this fast-changing world. That’s why we keep changing what we have been doing. The agency will spare no efforts to become the nation’s security hub to solve all cyber security issues.”
