LG succeeds in ATSC 3.0 field-test

By Bahk Eun-ji

LG Electronics said Monday that it has conducted a successful field test of an advanced television system committee (ATSC), a next-generation broadcasting transmission in Cleveland, in the United States.

The company previously demonstrated the standard ATSC 3.0 transmission technology, in collaboration with Gates Air, the largest television equipment company in North America, at the NAB international broadcasting equipment exhibition last year.

The ATSC 3.0 is technology that can transmit high-resolution images such as ultra high-definition (UHD) by using high efficiency video code (HEVC) technology and maximizing the efficiency of broadcasting frequencies.

HEVC has compression efficiency that is twice as high as existing standards. The ATSC 3.0 also enables the watching high-definition mobile broadcasts while driving at 250 kilometers per hour.

It allows local broadcasters to reach a number of people who don’t watch television at home. For example, commuters can use laptops or tablets to watch live telecasts of local news or sports events while they are in transit.

LG said the field test represents an important milestone in 4K UHD TV signals.

“This field test result shows that the ATSC 3.0 is designed to fully meet broadcaster requirements and advance the goal of moving rapidly to next-generation broadcasting,” said Skott Ahn, chief technology officer at LG Electronics.

The field test results show that the ATSC 3.0-enabling technology performs exactly as expected, and this means that broadcasters can look forward with confidence to reaching even more viewers with traditional television, with new Internet-based content, and with new money-making interactive services and advertising capabilities, he added.
