SKT releases global standard IoT platform

SK Telecom has developed a world-first Internet of Things (IoT) platform based on “machine-to-machine” (M2M) technologies.
The nation’s top mobile carrier said on Sunday it would unveil the IoT platform and demonstrate oneM2M technology at the oneM2M Showcase in France on Tuesday.
M2M refers to technologies that allow wireless and wired systems to communicate with similar devices. It provides customized services to users by collecting data and distributing it among the devices.
“OneM2M” ― the largest standardization body for M2M communications ― was set up in 2012 to develop and set international standards for the IoT sector. In France, companies, research centers and standardization organizations will demonstrate their IoT technologies and platforms.
OneM2M has unveiled its initial Candidate Release of Technical Specifications, the first step toward international recognition of the M2M standard.
SK Telecom said it had developed an open type of IoT platform, “Mobius,” in collaboration with nTels, a company providing operation supporting systems.
The platform can be applied not only to various M2M devices that corporations use, but also to small wearable IT devices.
“The IoT platform is the core technology to vitalize the nation’s IoT-related business, and SK Telecom will try to develop advanced technology continuously,” said ICT R&D division head Choi Jin-sung.
