Choi Nam-soo, former Money Today Network (MTN) CEO, was nominated as CEO of news broadcaster YTN, Sunday.

Choi, 56, earned his bachelor’s degree from Seoul National University in economics.

Choi worked as a reporter for the Korea Economic Daily, Seoul Economic Daily and broadcaster SBS. He joined YTN in 1995, where he served as business editor and head of the management and planning department.

He joined MTN in 2008 as head of the reporting department and later became CEO.

Choi will be appointed to the position at a general shareholders’ meeting on Dec. 22. His term as CEO will be three years.

YTN’s former CEO resigned before the termination of his term in May. YTN drew up a CEO candidate recommendation committee to carry out procedures to select his successor.

However, the National Union Media Workers’ YTN branch expressed disappointment, citing Choi left the company twice when it faced a crisis.

In 2008, YTN dismissed six reporters and punished 33 others for months-long protests against the then-Lee Myung-bak administration’s influence over the broadcaster’s news content. After the dismissals, the news channel's viewership plummeted.

“If (Choi) has the littlest amount of affection for the company, he should decide not to become CEO,” members said in a statement.
