Kim Hoe-chun, president of Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP), made his first overseas trip since taking office in March, visiting the Czech Republic to inspect progress on the Dukovany nuclear power project and reinforce cooperation with local stakeholders, the company said Wednesday.
KHNP said Kim met Czech government officials, project partners and nuclear regulators in a series of discussions aimed at reaffirming the company’s commitment to successful project execution and reviewing cooperation on key issues, including licensing and infrastructure development.
The Dukovany project involves the construction of two 1,000-megawatt APR1000 nuclear reactors in the Dukovany region. Following a contract signing in June 2025, the project has entered its early implementation phase.
On Monday (local time), Kim met executives of CEZ and EDU II, the project’s client entity, where he emphasized KHNP’s determination to ensure the project’s successful completion.
He also held talks with Czech Transport Minister Ivan Bednarik, calling for continued government support in developing timely transport infrastructure needed for the shipment of large-scale nuclear equipment.
In a separate meeting with a vice-chair of the Czech nuclear regulator State Office for Nuclear Safety, Kim reaffirmed KHNP’s commitment to fully complying with all relevant laws and safety standards throughout the licensing process.
On Tuesday, Kim met Czech Industry and Trade Minister and First Deputy Prime Minister Karel Havlicek to discuss policy directions for the Dukovany project, reiterating KHNP’s pledge to ensure stable progress in line with the agreed schedule.
He met with governors of the Vysocina and South Moravian regions, which play key roles in supporting project infrastructure, to discuss regional cooperation and measures for coexistence with local communities.
Kim also visited the Dukovany construction site to inspect preparations, urging strict safety and quality management while encouraging on-site workers.
“The Dukovany nuclear project is a key initiative for the Czech Republic’s energy security and carbon neutrality,” Kim said.
“KHNP will faithfully execute the project while strengthening the global competitiveness of Korea’s nuclear industry as a first mover in the global nuclear market.”
