Novelis Korea has set its sights on nurturing a young local workforce and helping regional development by signing a business agreement with North Gyeongsang Province, under which they will launch various programs aimed at supporting the future workforce, according to the company Wednesday.

Novelis Korea is the country's leading aluminum recycling and hot-rolled metal manufacturer.

The partnership was formed in response to a significant decline in the number of young people in the province, prompting the government to take urgent measures to retain and attract them.

Both Novelis Korea and the provincial government are focusing on creating job opportunities, enhancing welfare policies and organizing cultural events, all of which aim to revive the region's economy by bringing more young people to the region.

Novelis Korea, headquartered in North Gyeongsang Province's Yeongju, will collaborate with the provincial authority to host the Gyeongbuk Local Rebuilding Ideathon in November.

The event, which seeks to create job opportunities for young residents and improve their quality of life, will encourage young participants to identify local issues and develop solutions.

The Gyeongbuk Center for Creative Economy & Innovation, a non-government startup support center in the province, and a local community in the province's Yeongdeok County, which is popular among young people for sightseeing and strolling, will also join the event.

With their support, the company seeks to encourage participating young residents to devise creative, effective solutions for the province's tepid job market and daily living conditions.

North Gyeongsang Gov. Lee Cheol-woo said the government will provide due support to prevent the region from "losing its population to extinction."

"Starting with our partnership with Novelis Korea, we look forward to attracting more contributions from outside the province to support the region's young generation," Lee said.

Novelis Korea Vice President Park Jong-hwa said that the upcoming government-private partnership would hopefully stop the young generation's exodus and start drawing them from outside.

"We'll start contributing to the provincial government by making consistent investments to create more job opportunities," Park said.

Novelis is a subsidiary of aluminum and copper manufacturer Hindalco Industries under Mumbai-based multinational conglomerate Aditya Birla Group. Known as the world's biggest aluminum recycling company, the company said it has registered $16.2 billion in sales this year.
