About 130 academic experts, government institutes and the private sector from Korea and the U.S. discussed ways to advance industrial technology sharing and joint research and development (R&D) programs at a Korean government-organized event, the trade ministry said Wednesday.

The attendees stressed the need to significantly expand Korea-U.S. industry-academia technology cooperation and exchange programs, as outlined by a government initiative to bolster top-notch R&D projects under the broader goal of abolishing discrimination based on nationality.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said it held a Korea-U.S. Industrial Technology R&D Briefing in San Francisco, Tuesday (local time), and was presided over by First Vice Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Jang Young-jin.

In attendance were the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Stanford University, Houston University, NVIDIA, Google, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Maryland University, North Eastern University, Nevada University and Southwest Research Institute.

The researchers expressed enthusiasm for the government's drive to advance joint R&D projects and made inquiries about details on how to work closely with Korea-based global leaders from the public and private sectors, according to the ministry.

The ministry plans to outline a comprehensive global technology cooperation strategy next month, reflecting the advice of the participants.

The vice minister said solidarity and cooperation between local and overseas researchers is essential to addressing and solving challenges.

“The issues of global problems including the climate crisis require joint action, especially now since the global value chain is undergoing rapid reorganization around allies with shared values,” he said during the event held at Palo Alto Event Center, San Francisco.

Meanwhile, Jang visited Stanford University to discuss ways to establish the Korea-U.S. Industrial Technology Cooperation Center.
