SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won urged students studying abroad to strive to become global leaders while presenting scholarship certificates to students studying abroad with support from the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity at SK's building in Seoul, Monday.
Chey has been serving as the second director of the foundation since 1998, after his late father-in-law, former SK Group Chairman Chey Jong-hyun. The event was attended by 30 scholarship students, as well as officials from the foundation.
"Korea is the only country that has transitioned from receiving aid from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) to becoming a member country," Chey said. "To be a true leader, you should not forget what you have received from people around you and society, but think of ways to return it to society. It is your responsibility to make Korea a leading country in the world."
Chey emphasized that this year marks the 70th anniversary of the country's reconstruction after the Korean War armistice. Additionally, SK Group is also celebrating its 70th anniversary since its establishment, stressing that success was only possible due to talented individuals.
In addition, Chairman Chey expressed his dedication to winning the bid for the World Expo in Busan in 2030, "I embarked on the Expo bid to give back what we received from the international community during times of poverty. I will make the Expo in Busan a 'solution platform' to address the problems embraced by each country and society."
The Korea Foundation for Advancement of Science and Creativity was established by former Chairman Chey Jong-hyun in 1974 with the motto, "Planting trees looks ahead 10 years, cultivating talent looks ahead 100 years."
The foundation has been supporting Korean students to obtain master's and doctoral degrees at overseas educational institutions. Over the past 48 years, it has supported over 4,000 scholarship students through the Overseas Study Scholarship Program and University Special Scholarship Program and produced more than 860 Ph.D. graduates from prestigious universities worldwide.
