Korea Automobile Importers & Distributors Association (KAIDA) Vice Chairman Jung Yoon-young plans to strengthen communication among its members and global peers to advance the interests and development of the automotive industry, the association said Wednesday.

The former director general of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Korea was appointed as the vice chairman in January. The public relations expert is the first non-industry expert appointed to lead the highly specialized association.

He spent more than 30 years in reputation management, and has a deep understanding of Korean and global markets as well as corporate resources and profit management.

“Jung is expected to play a key role in representing the interests of automotive market participants,” the association said.

He graduated from Korea University before beginning his professional career at Samsung Corning, a glass and display solution affiliate of Samsung Group, in 1990.

In 1992, Jung joined the Korean office of Burson-Marsteller, a public relations firm, where he was promoted to a manager position in recognition of his outstanding capabilities.

His career in corporate communications continued thereafter at SC First Bank, Visa Korea and TongYang Life Insurance.

He oversaw marketing communications and fundraising at WWF Korea from July 2020 up until joining KAIDA.

Volkswagen Group Korea President and CEO Till Scheer, the chairman of KAIDA, said at the time of Jung's appointment in January that the association will create a paradigm shift in the automotive industry by transitioning to a next-generation mobility solution services provider.

“KAIDA has a pool of experts in a variety of fields to communicate and cooperate closely with local and foreign automobile authorities and policymakers,” Scheer said. “The appointment of Jung will contribute greatly to the association members who are seeking a broader perspective beyond mobility services.”

Established in 1995, KAIDA represents importers and distributors of foreign cars.

KAIDA lobbies in support of its members for government deregulation of the Korean import vehicle market, according to the association, and also helps manage and coordinate joint events for sales promotions and other activities for car importers and distributors.

“I will fortify cooperation and communications with government authorities, market participants and other stakeholders,” Jung said. “I will help create balanced market conditions and enhance consumer interests, thereby contributing to sustainable growth and the association.”
