Hyundai Motor and Kia will form a software development alliance with companies offering the best technology in the industry to accelerate Software Defined Vehicle (SDV) conversion, according to the company, Friday.

The companies signed a multilateral memorandum of understanding (MOU) with 17 companies, including Hyundai Motor Group affiliates and software companies, Thursday, to strengthen the competitiveness of vehicle control software development.

According to the business agreement, the participating companies launched the Hyundai Motor Group Model Based Development (MBD) Consortium, which includes a large number of domestic and foreign companies with the best technology in the field of software and virtual verification technology, including vehicle controller developers.

The consortium aims to build a software-centered development system more quickly through standardization and sharing of development solutions, along with improved investment efficiency in building software and virtual development environments.

The 19 companies include Hyundai Motor Group affiliates such as Hyundai Motor, Kia Motors, Hyundai Mobis, Hyundai Wia, Hyundai Kefico, Hyundai Transys, Hyundai NGB, and Hyundai Autoever, as well as Robert Bosch, Vitesco Technologies, HL Mando; and dSPACE, MathWorks, SureSoft Tech, Synopsys, IPG Automotive, ETAS, ControlWorks, and Vector.

In the past, the controller software was applied to each hardware after being developed to reduce errors, but the MBD-based development model has the advantage of maximizing efficiency by shortening the development period and improving quality, as it can be verified through virtual simulation.

In order to develop an advanced SDV, it is essential to develop software that integrates and controls various electronic devices inside the vehicle based on a domain centralized architecture.

The consortium is divided into a development group that develops controllers and software products and a technical group that supports specialized technologies.

Hyundai Motor and Kia plan to establish an open SDV development ecosystem by supporting technology exchange and collaboration among consortium participants.

“In order to lead the SDV era, it is essential to respond to the market quickly based on software technology,” Kim Yong-wha, vice president at HMG R&D Planning & Coordination Center said. “Through this, we will be able to present a more advanced SDV to our customers.”
