Korea will host an international spatial data standardization congress in Jeonju, North Jeolla Province, next year, the land ministry said Sunday.

The decision was made at the International Organization for Standardization (ISO)/Technical Committee (TC) 211 during an annual plenary meeting in Stockholm, Sweden from Dec. 5 to Dec. 9.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said the 2023 congress, the 56th international conference on spatial information, will include a standardization meeting joined by experts and academics from 70 member countries.

They will hold academic sessions and seminars on standardization case studies, and standard strategy advisory meetings.

The annual event will help local firms expand businesses overseas, with the ministry's assistance in spatial information technology promotion, raising international awareness and establishing a forum for international cooperation on digital twin technology.

The term digital twin refers to a virtual representation of a real-world physical system, people or a process that serves as the indistinguishable digital counterpart for practical purposes, such as system simulation, integration, testing, monitoring, and maintenance.

The technology will help improve the accuracy of simulation models enabled by the fuller integration of the internet of things (IoT). It can bolster the effective management of state resources, leading to an improvement in public safety and security, city planning, disaster prevention and capabilities to overcome environmental challenges.

“We will prepare for a successful hosting of the global event,” a ministry official said. “Korea will fortify cooperation with member countries for the continued advancement of international standards in spatial information.”

The ISO is a global standard-setting organization that shares technologies on collecting, processing and analyzing spatial information.

ISO/TC 211 comprises participating and observing members with the addition of the liaising organizations and ISO committees.

The standards within ISO/TC 211 are written in working groups and joint working group, each with a specific focus.

The TC work is then supported by various advisory groups. Korea became an ISO/TC 211 member in January 1995.
