LG Chem steps up efforts to solve environmental issues

LG Chem has been striving to solve environmental issues as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities, according to the company, Thursday.
With an aim to contribute to society, the company recently announced its Green Connector project to resolve worsening climate change and other environmental problems.
Its Green Connector vision focuses on maximizing environmental value in four main sectors: Green Education, Green Energy, Green Ecology and Green Economy.
As part of its Green Ecology project, the company has been expanding activities to preserve biodiversity and to pass on a rich natural environment to the next generation.
Its employees involved in Green Ecology activities joined hands with the Korean Federation for Environmental Movements (KFEM) to promote biodiversity on Bamseom, an island in the Han River in the heart of Seoul. It also recruited university students as supporters for the initiative.
Starting this month, the supporters will receive assistance from experts specialized in the ecology of Bamseom to develop teaching materials related to biodiversity and hold lectures using the materials at various facilities including local youth centers over the following six months.
The supporters will also conduct various activities to improve awareness of environmental protection on social medial platforms. To relay the importance of resolving environmental issues, LG Chem will distribute the teaching materials made by its student supporters to youth centers around the nation.
Since December 2018, in cooperation with the Seoul Metropolitan Government, the company established an ecosystem experience zone at an observatory on Mapo Bridge over the Han River, displaying a diverse range of content related to the environment with an aim to raise awareness about related issues.

To ensure the continuing development of the education program, LG Chem aims to foster future talented workers through “green education.”
For instance, the company has held a chemistry camp to teach young people about science through experiments. Since 2005, LG Chem has held a total of 60 chemistry camps for middle school students living near its offices. So far, more than 7,200 students have participated in the science camps.
This year, the company held two chemistry camps in January, inviting around 200 middle school students. Starting the second half of this year, the company has been operating contactless education programs.
LG Chem has also set a goal to respond to climate change with Green Energy, utilizing renewable energy sources and increasing energy efficiency.
The company has partnered with the Seoul Metropolitan Government and charity Community Chest of Korea to tackle various environmental issues. It has built solar panels and offers the financial benefits back to the youth.
To achieve its Green Economy goal, the company added it has been providing various support programs including financial support to companies that are engaging in eco-friendly projects.
"Through our social contribution vision Green Connector we have been focusing on connecting various experts in the field to help enhance environmental values in diverse sectors," said Park Jun-sung, vice president of public affairs at LG Chem.
