Volkswagen will be making a comeback here with the 2018 Passat GT with everything inside and out upgraded in safety and design to regain Korean consumers’ trust, the Korean unit of the German auto giant said Monday.

It will begin its marketing and sales of the premium sporty-looking mid-size sedan on February 1.

The Passat GT will feature smart driver assistance technologies such as pedestrian monitoring, which will alert drivers when it spots pedestrians. The sedan will also have a traffic jam assist, enabling easier and more comfortable driving through automatic acceleration and braking systems when in a traffic jam. It has an adaptive cruise control of up 160 kilometers per hour.

Volkswagen’s Passat was first introduced to the world in 1973. Since then, it has sold more than 22 million Passats globally. It has been the No. 1 best-selling mid-size sedan in Germany. The 2018 Passat GT is the eighth-generation model.

It sold 72,430 Passat cars in 2017 in Germany, followed by 68,584 Mercedes-Benz C-Class cars, according to Volkswagen’s data.

The concept of the 2018 Passat GT was born in a Tennessee garage at Volkswagen’s engineering planning center in the United States. This marks the first VW model to be developed in the U.S. (Advertorial)
