The G4 Rexton, Ssangyong Motor’s new large-sized SUV, is drawing attention for its solid body frame and rear-wheel-drive technology.
The SUV, which will be unveiled during the upcoming Seoul International Motor Show this week, is applied with the “Quad Frame,” a body frame jointly developed by Ssangyong Motor and POSCO.
The nation’s largest steelmaker utilized Giga Steel plates for the first time in the world to develop the G4 Rexton’s Quad Frame.
Giga Steel is advanced high-strength steel with great tensile strength. A Ssangyong Motor official said the Giga Steel plates installed in the G4 Rexton’s core body frame parts will protect drivers and passengers in case of an accident.
“In addition, about 63 percent of the SUV’s body contains ultra high strength steel,” the official said.
“Giga Steel is also as light as aluminum. Utilizing the very strong materials, the G4 Rexton SUV was able to lighten its weight to a great degree.”
The G4 Rexton SUV also has a front-engine and rear-wheel-drive layout, a vehicle power train structure that places the engine in the front of the vehicle while the driving wheels are located at the rear.
The rear-wheel-drive layout is believed to have advantages in vehicle weight distribution compared to a front-wheel-drive layout. It helps weight transfer during acceleration and secure traction.
The official said the SUV’s body and power train layout will also help reduce noise and shock delivered to passengers while maintaining its off-road driving performance.
