Hyundai Engineering & Construction (Hyundai E&C) has contributed to residents in developing countries where its construction projects are located, the company said Thursday.

The nation’s major construction company said it donated 373 million won ($312,000) to the Community Chest of Korea, Monday, to support communities in Ecuador, Indonesia, Bangladesh, the Philippines and Myanmar to build schools and sanitary facilities.

Company employees have been raising funds since 2010 and have donated about 2 billion won so far. The money has been used to build a community center in the Philippines, support multicultural families in Korea and supply drinking water in Kenya and Indonesia.

In 2015, Hyundai E&C focused its contributions on countries where it obtained orders. The global construction company supplied solar lanterns in Myanmar and built a child welfare center in Sri Lanka.

“It is an honor to spend the money raised by our employees to help marginalized people in various countries,” a Hyundai E&C official said. “We will continue to contribute to our neighbors and promote the donation culture of our company.”

On Dec. 15, Hyundai E&C received an award from the BKPM, an investment service agency of the Indonesian government, in recognition for its social contributions.

Since first becoming involved in a highway construction project in 1973, Hyundai E&C has completed 35 construction works in Indonesia. The company is currently building a hydroelectric power plant, a residence, a geothermal power plant and a coal-fired thermal power plant there.

As Hyundai E&C has established a close link to Indonesia, the company continues to contribute to Indonesian communities.

In 2014, Hyundai E&C supplied sanitary kits to seven villages near the company’s construction site to improve the hygiene of the communities, cooperating with Save the Children, an international NGO promoting children’s rights.

This year, the company constructed houses, a public health facility, kindergartens and drainage facilities in Indonesia, cooperating with Habitat for Humanity, an NGO building houses for the poor.

Hyundai E&C also sent university students from Korea to an area southeast of Jakarta this August where they did volunteer work, including teaching and putting on cultural performances.

“Indonesia has grown with our company for a long time as one of our most important partners,” a Hyundai E&C official said. “We will continue to communicate with the Indonesian government and residents to support local communities there.”
