Korean game company Smilegate said Wednesday its online gunfight game “Crossfire” will be produced as a movie by a Hollywood production firm.
This is the first time for a Korean game company to export intellectual property for a Hollywood movie, the company said.
“Smilegate believes this will be a good example to show the excellence of Korean intellectual properties on the global stage,” a Smilegate executive said.
Launched in 2007, Crossfire has attracted huge popularity in China with 500 million users worldwide. It recorded 1.5 trillion won in sales in the global market in 2014 alone, the company said.
U.S. movie company Original Film, which has produced hit titles such as Fast & Furious, will make the movie. Details about the movie’s scenario, actors and director will be announced later, Smilegate said.
“We will produce the best film by collaborating with Smilegate,” Original Film CEO Neal Moritz said. “We highly value the potential of Crossfire.”
