Hyundai Steel has been offering community-specific services through its “Happy Yes” volunteer group, consisting of 120 university students, since 2009.
The volunteers have played a key role in improving the steelmaker’s corporate image among local communities where it operates plants.
On Sept. 5, volunteers worked to turn neglected areas into vegetable gardens in the residential area of Incheon, where Hyundai Steel runs a mill. They also painted the walls of houses and were engaged in other activities to upgrade living conditions there.
In Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province, Happy Yes members worked to refurbish a rural community hall for senior citizens and donated various household items.
On Sept. 12, the volunteers visited Dangjin, South Chungcheong Province, where Hyundai Steel’s main plant is located, to build an environment-friendly playground at an elementary school. In Suncheon, South Jeolla Province, they distributed tourist maps to cyclists visiting the area.
“This year, Happy Yes volunteers will implement a wide range of community services aimed at protecting the environment and improving living conditions for low-income families,” a Hyundai Steel spokesman said.
“In particular, making and distributing a bicycle tourist map covering Suncheon and adjacent cities was a new kind of volunteer program because we did it in cooperation with Suncheon City government,” the spokesman said. “We would like to implement more projects jointly with municipal administrations and other organizations.”
