KT, the nation’s second-largest mobile carrier, said Wednesday that it has demonstrated its key technologies for the fifth-generation (5G) network at the National Assembly.

The move came as the company has focused on developing the next-generation networking platform, which it believes is the driving force of the company’s future business.

During the event, the company discussed its core strategies to realize the 5G network and open an era of the Internet of Things (IoT) before the PyongChang 2018 Winter Olympics. KT is the official sponsor of the upcoming event.

“KT will maximize synergies in the 5G network industry by expanding our information and communication technology (ICT) during the Olympics,” said Mark Hyung-joon Kim, senior vice president at the PyongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games BU.

“By introducing the 5G technology for the first time in the Olympics, we will provide new experiences and differentiated services to people around the world.”

KT demonstrated its three key technologies based on the 5G network ― 5G drone, 5G hyper-virtual reality and three-dimensional (3D) hologram ― during the event organized by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning.

The 5G drone exhibition served as a preview for the upcoming ICT-centered Olympics, the company said. It said the drone will be used to search for missing people and check traffic conditions near Olympics stadiums.

The 5G hyper-virtual reality technology can help create synthetic images in real-time without other broadcasting equipment. And the 3D hologram technology will be applied to performing places to produce stereoscopic images, the company said.
