KP Energy (KPECO) is building a power plant on a Western Pacific island of Micronesia.
The company said on Tuesday that it signed an agreement with the Madolenihmw municipal government on Aug. 7 in Kolonia Town, Pohnpei, the Federated States of Micronesia, to build a diesel power plant.
Under the agreement, KPECO will build, operate and turnover a power plant for the Pohnpei Madolenihmw Municipal Government, providing a reliable power source for the next 40 years.
“It is a region where rolling blackouts are the norm to save electricity. Under the agreement, linked with the grid of the local power company, the Power Utilities Corp., we will provide reliable and cheaper electricity,” said Jayden Im, vice president of KPECO.
When the plant is completed next year, it will sell electricity to the local government at $0.45 per kilowatt.
“It will relieve aging generators of the local power plant as well as letting foreign investors and developers know that there is reliable power source available in the region,” he added.
The company is currently in talks with the municipal government to build a second power plant.
“Beginning with the diesel power plant, we are looking to build more power plants run by green energy resources there in the future. With the suggestion of the federal government, we are also reviewing a development project to build infrastructure,” he said.
