Sarabeth’s, the famous restaurant in New York City where the stars of “Sex and the City” had brunch, will open here on Aug. 21.
The restaurant of the award-winning jam maker and acclaimed pastry chef Sarabeth Levine earned fame after being featured in the American romantic sitcom. A tourist attraction in New York, it attracts more than 1 million guests from around the world each year.
It is the first Korean branch and will open inside the Hyundai Department Store in Pangyo, Gyeonggi Province.
Levine began making orange-apricot marmalade from her home kitchen from a 200-year-old family recipe and selling it to local food shops in 1981.
Her orange-apricot marmalade went viral among New York gourmets, and now she owns and operates a jam factory, a wholesale-retail bakery café and nine restaurants.
Korea will become the second Asian nation to open one of her restaurants after Japan. Another location in Dubai is also scheduled to open.
In Japan, starting with her first branch in Tokyo in 2012, a fourth branch recently opened in Osaka. The Osaka branch became so popular it now brings in about 1,000 customers every day.
Popular items on the menu include eggs Benedict, pancakes, French toast and waffles.
The restaurants are best known for the brunch menu which bears Sarabeth’s hallmark of healthy American cuisine.
The “Legendary Spreadable Fruit,” an all-natural jam, has many celebrity fans including Oprah Winfrey, who said it is the only jam she has in her house; adding “I love every flavor she makes, but the orange-apricot marmalade is the one I reach for first.”
It is currently sold through more than 5,000 stores globally.
“After the long wait, I am very happy to open the first Sarabeth’s in Korea. I wish Korean gourmets could taste American cuisine and share the lifestyle of New Yorkers,” Levine was quoted as saying in a statement.
Sarabeth’s has 100 seats on the second-floor of Hyundai Department Store in Pangyo, Gyeonggi Province.
It is open between 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. during the week, and 9:00 a.m.- 8:30 p.m. on weekends.
