Korean employees work for 5 years at same company

Korean employees keep working at the same company for quite a shorter period of time than workers in other advanced countries, a report showed Thursday.

Korean employees work for an average of five years at one company before moving to another or retiring. That is quite short compared with 11.7 years in France, 11.2 years in Germany and 8.7 years in Britain, according to the report by the National Assembly Budget Office.

Those who leave their company within a year accounted for 37.1 percent of the working population, which is much higher than Japan, Denmark and the United States with the corresponding ratios of 7.3 percent, 20.3 percent and 19 percent, the report showed.

Workers who stay for more than 10 years at one company stood at 17.4 percent. Japan and Italy ranked among the highest with 44.5 percent and 45.3 percent.

Meanwhile, the average age of workers in Korea increased from 34.8 in 1993 to 39 in 2010 due in part to the overall aging population. (Yonhap)
