Samsung rolls out advanced mobile DRAM

Samsung Electronics Co., the world's top memory chip maker, said Tuesday it has begun mass production of what it claims is the industry's most advanced mobile dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chip.

The new LPDDR3 is the first two gigabyte (GB), low power double-data-rate 3 memory, using 30 nanometer class technology, to go into mass production, according to Samsung.

Samsung said the new mobile DRAM will help the company bolster its footing in the mobile DRAM market amid growing demand for smartphones and tablet computers.

"With this rapid introduction of 2GB LPDDR3, we are moving very assertively to expand our global leadership on the premium side of our extensive memory portfolio," said Hong Wan-hoon, executive vice president of Samsung's memory business.

The mobile DRAM market is expected to reach a value of US$9.49 billion by 2016, nearly doubling from the $5.81 billion tallied last year, according to market researcher IHS iSuppli. (Yonhap)
