Global AMOLED market grows 93% in second quarter

Global shipments of active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) panels jumped 93 percent in the second quarter from a year earlier, chalking up a bigger stake of the global display market, data showed Sunday.

The global AMOLED market was valued at $1.46 billion in the April-June period, accounting for 20.2 percent of the small and mid-size display market, according to the data by market research firm DisplaySearch.

AMOLED displays, mostly used in mobile handsets and tablet computers, consume less power and offer wider viewing angles and faster response times than liquid-crystal display (LCD) panels.

AMOLED shipments have been surging recently, powered by mobile and smartphone demand. They topped the 20 percent mark in the small and mid-size display market for the first time in the second quarter after logging a 11.1 percent market share a year earlier.

By company, local player Samsung Display Co. cemented its supremacy in the global AMOLED market with a dominant market share of 97.5 percent.

The company also grabbed the top spot in the overall small and mid-size display market with a 23.5 percent market share.

Japan Display Inc., an integration of Japanese firms Hitachi, Sony and Toshiba, came next with 15.9 percent. Japan's Sharp Corp. and Korea's LG Display Co. followed with 11.8 percent and 8.6 percent, respectively.

Market watchers projected Samsung's dominance to continue for the time being, with Japan Display to continue chasing the top spot.

The market for AMOLED panels totaled $3.36 billion last year, more than doubling from $1.25 billion the previous year. (Yonhap)
