Galaxy S2 tops 10 mil. mark in sales

By Yoon Ja-young

The Galaxy S2, a premium smartphone for the global market by Samsung Electronics, marked 10 million sales in five months since its launch in April.

It is the fastest 10-million seller achieved by a Samsung handset. Samsung Electronics recorded 10 million sales in six months of its Star Phone, a feature phone, in November 2009.

It means over 60,000 Galaxy S2s were sold around the world each day, or a handset per second.

Unlike other phones whose popularity is confined to the local market, the Galaxy S2 is globally popular.

In Europe, it sold 3.4 million, and 2.3 million in Asia. It started selling in the United States, the major market for Samsung Electronics along with Europe this month.

The Galaxy S2 is the number one smartphone in around 10 countries in Europe, including France, Germany and Russia.

Samsung Electronics attributed the success to high consumer satisfaction with the 4.3 inch super AMOLED screen, dual core processor, HSPA+ 21 Mbps, and slim design at only 8 millimeters thick.

“We are glad that 10 million consumers around the world are enjoying smart life with the Galaxy S2. We will strengthen our leadership in the smartphone market, continuing the success we had with the Galaxy S2,” a representative for Samsung said.

Some say that a lack of competitor in the market has benefited Samsung. Apple hasn’t released a new model since June last year when it launched the globally popular iPhone 4. While it is unconfirmed, the market expects that Apple will release the much anticipated iPhone 5 in October. Apple’s patent lawsuit against Samsung Electronics to block its sales also ended up promoting Galaxy S2 to consumers who hadn’t heard of it. Samsung is likely to counterattack the iPhone 5, seeking a sales ban on the phone through its own patent suits.

Samsung Electronics was somewhat late arriving to the smartphone competition. However, it quickly launched the predecessor of Galaxy S2, the Galaxy S to catch up.

It took 40 days less for the Galaxy S2 to mark 5 million sales than the Galaxy S, and two months less to reach the 10 million mark. The Galaxy S recorded 10 million sales seven months after its launch.
