Samsung Widens Mobile-Phone Market Share Lead Over Motorola

South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. increased its share of the global cellular phone market in the third quarter, widening its lead over Motorola Inc. of the United States as the world's second-largest handset maker, according to a U.S.-based researcher Monday.

Samsung's global market share rose to 14.9 percent in the third quarter from 14.4 percent from a quarter earlier, while Motorola's share slipped to 13 percent from 13.7 percent, the researcher at Strategy Analytics said.

Nokia Oyj's share climbed 0.2 percent to 39.1 percent, the researcher said.

LG Electronics Inc. also saw its global market share rose 0.3 percent to 7.7 percent.

In the three months ended Sept. 30, global handset shipment rose 10.4 percent from three months ago to 286 million units, the researcher said.
