LG Sues Taiwans Quanta for DVD Patents Infringement

LG Electronics filed a lawsuit against Taiwan's Quanta Computers in the United States for infringement of four of its DVD patents.

In the suit filed at the Western District Court of Wisconsin Tuesday, LG is seeking a court injunction for Quanta's use of the protected technologies as well as monetary compensation. It is the second time for LG to sue the Taiwanese PC maker since 2000.

LG said Quanta has appropriated the patented technology to produce laptop computers that were supplied to U.S. PC sellers, such as Dell and Hewlett Packard, as an original equipment manufacturing (OEM). The patents cover data searching and copying methods of DVDs, LG said.

``LG's proprietorship of DVD technologies is widely recognized throughout the industry and the unlicensed use of our intellectual property is not acceptable under any circumstances,'' said Lee Jeong-hwan, executive vice president of LG's intellectual property team.

They are waiting for the court's final decision, expected to be made next year.
