The Export-Import Bank of Korea (Eximbank) said Wednesday that its Senior Executive Director Hwang Ki-yeon has been appointed as the bank's 23rd president.

Hwang is an in-house expert who joined the bank in 1990. Since then, he has held key positions, including head of the service industry finance department, the human resources department and the planning department.

It is also notable that he has experience leading the Inter-Korean cooperation department, which is expected to play a greater role under the Lee Jae Myung administration.

Since 2023, he has served as executive director, overseeing risk management, digital finance, development finance, and government-commissioned fund operations.

He holds a bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Jeonbuk National University and a master’s degree in Information Management from KAIST.

Eximbank officials say Hwang is respected for his leadership and strong communication skills. His broad experience across banking operations — as well as his insight into the era of artificial intelligence — is also widely recognized.

This marks the first time in the bank's history that two consecutive leaders have been appointed from within the organization. As a state-run policy bank, the role has traditionally been filled by senior officials from government agencies such as the Ministry of Economy and Finance or the Financial Services Commission.

On July 25, Yoon Hee-sung, the first internally appointed president of Eximbank, completed his three-year term and stepped down. Since then, Deputy CEO Ahn Jong-hyuk had been serving as acting president.

With the three-month leadership vacancy now resolved, executive-level positions such as vice president roles are also expected to be filled soon.

"With another internal appointment to the presidency, we expect the new president to leverage his extensive experience to actively support Korea-U.S. trade cooperation and strategic high-tech industries through financial initiatives that contribute to the national economy," an Eximbank official said.

The leadership of the Eximbank is appointed by the president on the recommendation of the Minister of Economy and Finance.
