Dongwha Electrolyte, a Korean specialty chemical producer that supplies key components for electric-vehicle batteries, has secured a government designation for its electrolyte solution technology, a move that could unlock tax incentives and state support.
The company said Friday that its lithium-ion battery electrolyte compound had been recognized as a “national strategic technology.” The designation, part of a broader government push to strengthen domestic supply chains, was granted to just three applicants in the latest review cycle.
The company, an affiliate of Dongwha Enterprise, said the designation was confirmed by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Institute of S&T Evaluation and Planning under the first round of the 2026 national strategic technology verification program.
The program, based on the Special Act on the Promotion of National Strategic Technologies, evaluates whether technologies held by companies and research institutions meet national strategic criteria, including excellence, maturity, commercialization capability and industrial impact. Of 38 applications reviewed, only three passed, the company said.
Dongwha Electrolyte’s technology centers on a hybrid electrolyte additive based on a multibond structure designed to enhance the core performance of lithium secondary batteries. The company said the additive improves battery output, extends lifespan and strengthens high-temperature stability.
The technology also reduces reliance on imports in the electrolyte additive market, positioning it as a key material for strengthening Korea’s domestic battery industry competitiveness, the company said.
The designation was granted under the “possession and management” category, which requires companies to prove ownership through patents or academic publications. The category is considered more difficult to obtain than the research and development classification, which can be awarded to technologies still under development.
With the designation, Dongwha Electrolyte now meets a key requirement to apply for a special listing track for companies with advanced technologies. The company is also eligible for benefits including additional points in government research and development projects, policy financing support and preferential status in military service designation programs.
It said the recognition demonstrates that the company’s proprietary capabilities contribute to strengthening the global competitiveness of Korea’s battery industry.
