Prosecutors concluded Monday that allegations at the center of the "memogate" scandal were based on rumors fabricated by two disgruntled presidential aides. The announcement of the outcome of their interim findings appeared to support comments made by President Park Geun-hye that reports published by the Segye Ilbo regarding a power struggle among her aides were “baseless.”
In 2009, the Korea National Oil Corp. purchased a Canadian refining firm, North Atlantic Refining Limited. That acquisition is now considered a total failure that was brought on through a mixture of mismanagement, lack of supervision, and an ill-prepared state drive.
South Korea and China held working-level security talks in Seoul Monday to discuss an array of bilateral and regional security issues such as the situation with North Korea, according to the foreign ministry. The meeting, the second of its kind since December 2013, comes after North Korea recently offered an olive branch to Seoul by proposing a summit between the political leaders of the two countries.
An English-language book containing accounts from 12 victims of sexual slavery by the Japanese military before and during World War II was published Monday. A government commission looking into their experiences published "Can You Hear Us?: The Untold Narratives of Comfort Women," and the first 20,000 copies will now be distributed, mainly in the United States.
