Korea rallies past Czechia 2-1 for opening victory

ZAPOPAN, Mexico — Korea defeated Czechia 2-1 to open their 2026 FIFA World Cup in Mexico on Thursday, taking a big step toward a place in the knockout stage. Substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu netted the go-ahead goal in the 80th minute at Estadio Guadalajara in Zapopan, near Guadalajara in western Mexico, after the teams had traded a goal apiece earlier in the second half following a goalless opening half. Ladislav Krejci headed in the match's first goal for Czechia in the 59th minute before Hwang In-beom scored the equalizer eight minutes later. Hwang then assisted Oh's goal, which came a couple of minutes after a would-be Czechia goal was disallowed on an offside. This was the fourth time that Korea won their first match of a World Cup, following 2002, 2006 and 2010. Korea progressed to the knockout phase in 2002 and 2010. Korea's next Group A match will be against Mexico, one of the tournament's three co-host countries, at 7 p.m. next Thursday at Estadio Guadalajara. It will be 10 a.m. next Friday in Korea. Rotate your left forearm to gain more distance

By Kim Jeong-kyooKorea Times Golf Columnist A good posture, combined with a proper grip, enables a great swing. A great swing just happens. You cannot create a great swing with strenuous in-swing efforts. Once you’ve gripped your club and addressed the ball, you’ve already decided the fate of your shot.To launch big, booming drives, you need to release your clubhead fully. To this end, you need to set up correctly like a weight lifter. Adopting a weight lifter’s posture helps you turn your body effectively and swing your arms correctly. You’ll turn your shoulders and hips properly, rotating your arms effectively.Undoubtedly, your arm rotation helps you square your clubface and speed up your club to the full through your ball. This allows you to hit the ball straight and far to your satisfaction. To rotate your arms correctly, you need to set up properly. Stand over your ball comfortably. Tilt your upper body forward so your arms hang freely, with your hands under your chin. Imagine you’re a weight lifter in the Olympics and in position ready to perfo

IT'S GOOD FOR YOUR GAME

Wrist hinge opens door to powerful swingOne of the most important angles in your swing is the one created by your trail wrist as it bends into a “hinged” position at the top of your backswing. Relax your arms, and your wrist will do this naturally in response to the momentum of your backswing.During the downswing, strong forces pulling on the clubhead can cause golfers to lose the crucial trail wrist hinge much too early. To avoid this power loss, practice holding your trail wrist angle in place from the top of your backswing all the way through the impact zone.At first, keeping your wrist bent (concave) longer than you’re used to will feel like you can’t square the clubface in time for impact. But you’ll soon realize that doing so will allow you to square the clubface to the ball with power, not by manipulating the clubface with your hands, but through the proper rotation of your body. At the top of the swing, Boo Weekley folds his trail wrist so his palm faces the sky. But many golfers lose the angle formed by their trail wrist too early

South Korea claims 3-0 win over Jamaica

Ji Dong-won heads in the first goal in a friendly match against Jamaica at Seoul World Cup Stadium, Tuesday. / YonhapJi Dong-won vying for sole striker spotBy Nam Hyun-wooJi Dong-won led Korea to rally past Jamaica 3-0 in a friendly match at Seoul World Cup stadium, Tuesday, showing he is still a strong contender for the Taeguk Warriors’ striker role.Ji, who seemed to be neglected by coach Uli Stielike’s search for a sole striker, scored one goal and earned a penalty kick. Also, he contributed to another goal after his dipping shot was punched away by the Jamaican goalkeeper into the path of Hwang Ui-jo who scored Korea’s third goal.Since he joined the national team for international games in March, he was far from earning additional caps, but as he gained more playing time at the Bundesliga’s FC Augsburg, Stielike called on him for the challenging away game against Kuwait last week and Tuesday’s friendly with Jamaica. As Ji shone in the game, the 24-year-old will likely be in consideration for the sole striker role down the road, competing with Sti

Lee So-ra sits at 274th, and rival and friend Han Na-lae is 277th.“This may be what makes our achievements meaningful, that so few athletes from Korea are taking up the challenge,” Jang said. “But I do wish more would try it out.”Jang began tennis as a y
