World Cup work still remains for Korea

On Thursday morning in Korea, millions will tune in to see what transpires in the Mexican city of Monterey as Korea faces South Africa. A win or a draw will ensure second place in Group A, but defeat would mean a third-place finish — though that could still mean a place in the Round of 32 — or fourth, which would mean elimination and humiliation. Which version of the Taeguk Warriors will turn up? Will it be the team that looked full of energy, speed and imagination as they beat the Czech Republic 2-1? Or will it be the passive pack that lost 1-0 to Mexico? If they had won or tied the game, then the final group game could have been about resting a few players and getting ready for the Round of 32. Instead, there is work still to do. South Africa, ranked 38 places below Korea at 61st in the world, have yet to impress. Their opening games were a 2-0 defeat against Mexico and a 1-1 draw with the Czechs. Bafana Bafana’s Belgian boss Hugo Broos is expecting a tough test. "I'm very sorry to say this, but they are like Duracells: You plug them in, and they start running, and they run for

The contest was also sponsored by the Korean Amateur Baseball Association. The Cardinals’ opponent was a team referred to as the Seoul All-Stars, or Korean All-Stars. Baseball pitcher gets 10-month suspended sentence for match-fixing

A local court on Friday slapped a suspended sentence with probation on a baseball pitcher for fixing games. The Changwon District Court sentenced NC Dinos pitcher Lee Tae-yang, who was indicted on charges of fixing games in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO), to a 10-month jail term with a stay of execution for two years. The court also ordered the 23-year-old right-hander to forfeit 20 million won (US$17,940) and serve 200 hours of community service."Match fixing from pro athletes can't be accepted because it's an act of self-negation," the court said. "The defendant received high expectation from fans as a prospect of the NC Dinos club, but he tore down the trust."The court, however, said it took into account that Lee confessed to the charges raised and actively cooperated in the investigation before the ruling.Lee was indicted without physical detention for fixing games last season in the KBO. The prosecutors said he fixed plays in four starts, including a game against the Kia Tigers on May 29, 2015. They said Lee deliberately gave up a run in the first inning and later received

Integrated nat'l sports body to have new face for president

South Korea's top sports body will see new faces running for its presidency as the current leaders have decided not to enter the race.Kang Young-joong, who is the co-chief of the integrated Korean Olympic Committee (KOC) along with Kim Jung-haeng, said Friday he will not enter the sports body's presidential election, scheduled for Oct. 5. Kim also recently hinted at not running for president.Under the rule, Kang had to resign from his post to enter the election. The KOC code says an incumbent leader seeking presidency must resign before the election committee is formed. The election committee was formed in this morning after the KOC board of directors meeting."From the start, I wasn't thinking about becoming president of the merged sports body," Kang said. "My job is to work until the new president is elected."Kang, formerly head of the Korea Council of Sport for All (KOCOSA), and Kim, who previously led the KOC, were inaugurated co-presidents of the integrated body in March and were given their terms until October.Under domestic law, the KOC, which oversees the country's sports in g

IT'S GOOD FOR YOUR GAME

The scales under my feet record the story of weight shift. Near the top of this swing, the weight is loaded into my trail hip.During the downswing, I can tell by looking at the numbers on the scales that the weight shifts to the front hip to allow the rotation necessary to deliver the club to the ball correctly.Correct hip switch required for maximizing powerBy T.J. TomasiThe hip is a ball-and-socket joint where the femur, the large bone in your upper leg, plugs into the pelvic girdle. Your hip joint is activated when load (weight) is placed in the joint.Your goal, if you want a consistently correct swing, is to be “in” the correct hip at the correct time. I use the word “in” to mean that you have established that hip joint as the center of rotation by transferring weight into it, and then turning your body around it.Given the anatomy of the body and the physics of the swing, there must be a “hip switch” to maximize power. This is one of the swing prerequisites that I call “non-negotiable,” meaning that it must be satisfied or your swin

What you can learn from Olympic champ Park In-bee

Park In-bee reacts after making a birdie putt on the ninth hole during the opening round of the women's golf event at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Aug. 17. / YonhapBy Kim Jeong-kyooThe 2016 Rio Olympic golf champion Park In-bee’s swing reflects her calm personality. Her swing is idiosyncratic. She does not hinge her wrists fully on the backswing. Her swing is not athletic and powerful. But you’ll hit your ball better if you emulate her perfect rhythm, tempo and balance. Her swing features great rhythm, perfect timing and good balance.Park’s swing does not have much power. Her keys to success are her outstanding short game, especially her putting, and her mental strength. But you need to remember what she said about her swing: “I do not care much about what they say about my swing. I know what’s best for me and I am the specialist for my golf style.”Park’s wrists aren’t flexible, which limits her wrist hinge. She also has limited trunk rotation. These are the two major stumbling blocks to being a long hitter. But she hits h
