World Cup work still remains for Korea

On Thursday morning in Korea, millions will tune in to see what transpires in the Mexican city of Monterey as Korea faces South Africa. A win or a draw will ensure second place in Group A, but defeat would mean a third-place finish — though that could still mean a place in the Round of 32 — or fourth, which would mean elimination and humiliation. Which version of the Taeguk Warriors will turn up? Will it be the team that looked full of energy, speed and imagination as they beat the Czech Republic 2-1? Or will it be the passive pack that lost 1-0 to Mexico? If they had won or tied the game, then the final group game could have been about resting a few players and getting ready for the Round of 32. Instead, there is work still to do. South Africa, ranked 38 places below Korea at 61st in the world, have yet to impress. Their opening games were a 2-0 defeat against Mexico and a 1-1 draw with the Czechs. Bafana Bafana’s Belgian boss Hugo Broos is expecting a tough test. "I'm very sorry to say this, but they are like Duracells: You plug them in, and they start running, and they run for

K-League enjoys more success in Asia

Jeonbuk Motors forward Lee Dong-gook, right, celebrates with his teammates after scoring his team’s fourth goal during the second leg of the AFC Champions League quarterfinal match against Shanghai SIPG at Jeonju World Cup Stadium, Tuesday. / YonhapBy John Duerden There are good weeks and bad weeks in football and the past seven days have been very good indeed for Korea.Coming after two uncertain performances from the national team in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers against China and Syria, K-League clubs reasserted their regional preeminence in the Asian Champions League. In the quarterfinals of the continental competition Jeonbuk Motors and FC Seoul were drawn against Chinese opposition. As even casual football fans know, Chinese Super League clubs have been making international headlines lately with sustained spending of big money on big-name players that is only matched by the English Premier League.Shanghai SIPG and Shandong Luneng are no exception but they are both licking their wounds after being sent packing from Asia's biggest club tournament.Shanghai was the fi

Fingers crossed for Lee's 600th home run

Samsung Lions’ designated hitter Lee Seung-yuop / YonhapBy Kang Hyun-kyungIf Lee Seung-yuop hits one more home run in the remaining 18 games of this year’s season to mark his milestone 600th homer, it will be a record unlikely to be broken at least in the near future.During his two decades in professional baseball, which includes his eight years in the Japanese league, the 40-year-old Samsung Lions’ designated hitter made 599 hits over the outfield fence. He’s hit 440 home runs at home, while making 159 in Japan between 2003 and 2011 when he returned to the Lions. With the milestone record close at hand, Lee is poised to make history in the 34 years of professional baseball in Korea.“We have had no players like Lee. I think it’s hardly likely that we’ll have a player like him in the Korean baseball league in the near future,” said baseball analyst Min Hoon-ki.“There are plenty of great baseball players and they are younger than Lee. But I think the probability of one or some of them outperforming Lee in their careers is not likely.
