World Cup work still remains for Korea

On Thursday morning in Korea, millions will tune in to see what transpires in the Mexican city of Monterey as Korea faces South Africa. A win or a draw will ensure second place in Group A, but defeat would mean a third-place finish — though that could still mean a place in the Round of 32 — or fourth, which would mean elimination and humiliation. Which version of the Taeguk Warriors will turn up? Will it be the team that looked full of energy, speed and imagination as they beat the Czech Republic 2-1? Or will it be the passive pack that lost 1-0 to Mexico? If they had won or tied the game, then the final group game could have been about resting a few players and getting ready for the Round of 32. Instead, there is work still to do. South Africa, ranked 38 places below Korea at 61st in the world, have yet to impress. Their opening games were a 2-0 defeat against Mexico and a 1-1 draw with the Czechs. Bafana Bafana’s Belgian boss Hugo Broos is expecting a tough test. "I'm very sorry to say this, but they are like Duracells: You plug them in, and they start running, and they run for

Hotspur face uncertainty over Son Heung-min

Son Heung-minBritish media take keen interest on Son’s military issue By Baek Byung-yeulEver since English Premier League’s Tottenham Hotspur signed Son Heung-min last year, fans anticipated the young Korean football star will provide the offensive spark for the London-based club.Against all expectations, however, the 24-year-old was held to only four goals in 28 matches for Tottenham, and rumors had it that Son will return to the German Bundesliga where he spent his previous five-plus seasons before the beginning of this 2015/16 season.Despite all the rumors, Son stayed with the Hotspur and he seems to be making a fresh start in his second Premier League season as he has already scored five goals for the team. After scoring two goals against Middlesbrough on Saturday to help his team to its 2-1 victory, Son netted the winning goal in Tottenham’s 1-0 victory over CSKA Moscow in their UEFA Champions League Group E action in Moscow, Tuesday.By this time, British media started talking about Son’s military issues, examining uncertainty over Son’s future

IT'S GOOD FOR YOUR GAME

At the top of the swing, the clubface looks skyward. Here in the follow-through, the face is turned to the ground. It’s about controlling the clubfaceBy T.J. TomasiI have taught a number of expert players, and they all have one thing in common: They have control of their clubface. When I ask average players to take a practice swing in slow motion and demonstrate where the face should be at key points, they have trouble. Basically, unless you’re an expert, you have no idea what the clubface is doing. If you’re inconsistent, hitting one ball straight, the next to the right and the third to the left, chances are this drill can help you “feel the face.”These are the four key points in the swing to focus on and the corresponding direction the clubface should be pointing for each:1. Address — face at the target2. At the top — face at the sky3. Impact — face at the target4. Follow-through — face at the ground Take your normal setup and make sure the face of the club is pointing down your line of start. Then repeat this phrase as you

7-point advice on making compact three-quarter swing

By Kim Jeong-kyooTo hit your ball far to your satisfaction, you need to synchronize your swing with your body turn. More importantly, you need to speed up your club so its speed peaks through your ball. Toward this end, you’d better make a compact three-quarter backswing. Seven-point advice here will help you whack your ball successfully to your satisfaction with a simple three-quarter swing.First, rotate your forearms as you swing your club back, keeping the distance between your elbows staying intact. That helps you widen your swing arc and create your torque to the full. Don’t spread your arms and lift them as you complete your backswing. That prevents you from controlling your body on the downswing. If you cannot control your body and club, you cannot square your clubface, let alone hit your ball solidly.Take care to let your arms remain close together, and hinge your wrists properly as you rotate your arms. You will create a bigger swing width and build up greater power. You will eventually hit your ball as far as you want.Second, shorten your backswing. Speeding up

Pitcher indicted in illegal online gambling scandal

An Ji-man / Korea Times fileA Korean baseball pitcher has been indicted on charges of engaging in an illegal online gambling scandal, prosecutors here said Wednesday. An Ji-man, once a pitcher for the Samsung Lions in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO), gave 160 million won ($146,000) to help his friend open an illegal gambling website, they said. The pitcher, however, denied the allegation, reportedly saying that he lent the money because he was told that his friend was going to use it to open a restaurant. In July, the Lions asked the KBO to authorize the termination of An's contract after he faced police questioning for his involvement in opening the illegal gambling website. The KBO then temporarily suspended the right-hander from joining baseball activities, saying it would take additional steps as necessary, depending on court decisions.Earlier this year, An faced a separate investigation from the local authorities for illegal overseas gambling charges. The investigation of this case is currently suspended since the whereabouts of gambling site operators who can possibly give r

Lotte Giants' fans becoming sarcastic

A Lotte Giants’ fan holds up the sign that reads, “1 win, 12 defeats, ha ha” at a baseball game between NC Dinos and Lotte Giants in Changwon Masan Baseball Stadium, Sunday. / YonhapBy Kang Hyun-kyungThe Busan-based Lotte Giants’ 12 consecutive defeats in the matches against its regional rival NC Dinos this season have let its home fans down.Disappointed by the losing streak, some fans jeer at the team they support.“One win, 12 defeats? Ha ha,” reads one of the banners hung in the baseball stadium in the southeastern city of Changwon, Sunday.Another banner goes somewhat insulting by questioning the qualifications of Giants players: “Are you really professionals? If so, how come pros could win only one out of 13 games, while giving Dinos the rest?”The actual number of Giants’ defeats before Sunday was 11. But those fans used 12 losses, instead of 11, to show their low expectations for their team. The Giants lost that game too, failing to regain fans’ trust.“It’s hard to explain what caused the Giants to have s
